Adding a factory bussed relay box?
Because I may want to add two more relays for heated seats, I figured it would be nice to just add a bussed relay box that is powered by one power lug like factory under hood fuse/relay box.
I looked into aftermarket ones like the Eaton Bussman series and they are pricey. I don't mind paying, but I actually have two spare engine harnesses from 96 Impalas and they have bussed relay/fuse boxes with them.
Do you guys see any problem with cutting one of those out and wiring up my relays into it? I figure I would wire the two fuel pumps into the old fan relay and the davies craig pump into the old fuel pump relay and I should have a few extra spaces for other relays and fuses. I can mount it near the alternator and power it with a 2 gauge wire direct from the alternator. The fuel pumps have a 20amp max draw so I would THINK that wouldn't be more than the factory electric fans on the B body, and the intercooler pump is only 10amp max draw so the factory fuel pump relay should work for that (??). I could just solder the wiring to the existing ones so I don't even need to re-pin anything.
Is there any reason this is a bad idea, or anyone have a better/easier solution?
I found this on a 02 lincoln ls. It has 7 relay slots and large fuses for the main power wires and lots of slots for mini fuses. It has a removable cover on the backside so easy access to wiring. The older crown vics have a smaller square box that have 4 relay slots & lots of maxi fuse slots and a few standard fuse slots.
What I really like about this box is that you can easily take the terminals out and rearrange it however you want.
Here's a picture of the style of box I'm talking about:
Here is how mine is arranged:
Here's how I repinned it:
Here's what the bottom looks like (don't pay attention to the numbers, they're specific to my swap):
