Default Crank Snouts

I've always wondered what the significance of using the big block snout diameter on a small block crank was?

It's my understanding that traditional sbc have issues of crank snouts breaking when lots and lots of accessories (vacum pumps, dry sumps oiling, chargers, whatever) are run off of the pulleys and such which is why they use big block snouts which supposedly are stronger.
