Default LS1 engine builders/assemblers: Installing cam bearing question...

Can the front cam bearing be installed from the front of the motor with the shortblock in the car? The motor is stripped of accessories and the radiaor, condensor, etc is gone, so there should be plenty of room from the front. We got a scarred front cam bearing (don't ask) on a 3000 mile LS6 shortblock, and really don't wanna pull the motor. I was under the impression that the bearings had to be knocked in from the back, since the "lip" is on the backside of the bearing. (?) Anyone know for sure? Anyway in hell to get a new front cam bearing in without pulling/disasembling the motor?

Thanks, Shawn

It can be done but it has to be done right! you need the correct size cam driver or you will distort the brg, also it is easy to get it in crooked, so go slow and easy keeping the bearing square.

Yeah, the idea of doing it from the back is that the cam tool goes trough the entire cam bore a squares up on the other end. I suppose it is possible, but difficult.

Yes, you can put it in from the front! I'm not sure how you are going to get the original bearing out though. Make sure you pay attention and have the right bearing, as the cam bearings are different sizes, and are stamped #1 through #5.
