direct injection
Some advantages:
1. Fuel injected directly into combustion chamber
2. Fuel injected creates a cooling effect on piston
3. Timing of fuel injection allows several compression point increase(most current systems are about 1.5:1 higher compression, but more is available).
4. Cam timing events versus fuel injection time don't allow unburned fuel out exhaust valve during cam overlap.
The biggest hurdle is sulfur in gasoline. New laws that are no in effect require gasoline to be below 30ppm in sulfur and we should now see more engines coming. Due to fuel system changes, PCM changes and combustion chamber changes, you cannot simply swap over to GDI on your current motor.
