Sorry to bring this one back up. An affordable alternative could be the dm performance girdle. They aren't a sponsor, but just type in their name and it should come up. If you plan on running a lot of boost or nitrous on an aluminum block it seems like it would help with everything staying concentric and together. Hardcore Racing's Blue Thunder runs it on it's modified C5R block. I'm not aware of the price of hot honing, but everyone saying it's expensive makes me think it costs a hell of a lot more than a $400 girdle and then $75+ stud kit.

Do they still use a torque plate to bore or hone, like the gen 1 engines?

I don't know about "moving around" but the aluminum blocks do expand slightly more. That's why clearances are typically altered vs. the norm (cast iron), that's all thats needed. The hot honing thing has come and gone over the last 20+ years or so, every now and then it gets looked at (as it should) as the hot new thing but has never seemed to make much differance.

Yes, we are one of the few companies that owns a hot hone. We do not generally hot hone street engines due to cost:benefit ratio.

If you mean when hot honing, yes: The water jacket has to be sealed off to hot hone, necessitating a plate of some sort, and deck plate honing is pretty well universally accepted, whereas hot honing is smelly, complicated, time-consuming and not always felt to be worth the trouble.
