Default Valve Lash adj. question

What are some techniques for getting your piston to top dead center while the engine is in the car. I am adjusting my vavle lash this weekend and know that this has to be done while the piston is at top dead center. Alot of people do this with the engine out of the car, but my engine will not be out of my car for a long time. I really think my valves are improperly adjusted costing me power. The engine is an LT1 with a hydraulic lifter and crane 1.6 self aligning rr's.

another option, for me it is easier and more accurate to do it this way, turn eng till the exhaust valve of a given cyl starts to open, adj that cyl's intake valve, then turn till that cyl's intake valve starts to close, adj that cyl's exhaust valve. Move from cyl to cyl any order. I like to go up one bank then the other so if I get interupted, it is easier to know where I left off.

You can either turn eng manually or click starter with remote or have someone in car do it while observing the rocker arms.

Okay, thanks! I'll do it with a click start and have someone keep an eye on the rockers.

The intake/exhaust setting by the cylidner is a pretty good way to set rockers.

You can also use a degree wheel to set each cylinder. Use 90 degree increments.

As for rotating the engine, I wouldn't use the starter method. You'll overshoot
almost everytime.

Get some sort of crank adapter and use a torque arm to rotate the engine.

Will i have to remove more components besides the valve covers to use this method?

Most likely.

Whatever it takes to get a positive grip on the crankshaft snout.

I don't know how easily the crank bolts strip on LSx motors, but if you're
in a bind, remove the spark plugs and pulley drive belts.

Set a torque wrench to about 5 lbs./ft. over the manufacturer recommended torque.

If the wrench clicks, the crank bolt is tightening and could strip.
Stop turning via the crank bolt.
