Plastic trim piece removal?

Plastic trim piece removal? Has anyone ever taken the plastic trim piece out that goes around the area in front of the guage cluster? If so how did you get it out? <img src="gr_stretch.gif" border="0">
I've tried to get it out but, it looks like the steering column would have to be dropped to get it out without breaking it. <img src="gr_sad.gif" border="0">
I could possibly do what I want with it in place but, it would be real easy with that piece out.
