What year car? The tach sensing wire is in a different pin location on the PCM for the various years.
You also have to set the tach to operate in 4 cylinder mode, most tachs have a switch or wires to clip to make them operate in this mode.

Pro Stock John--
Nice set-up, I've been interested in putting a tach in my car also, but was unsure of the location. Originally I was going to put in to the left of the steering wheel, but after seeing your setup I like it better, especially since I plan on adding a pillar-pod later. My question is how did you bolt the tach to the dash? Do you have pics from the passanger side? <img src="graemlins/gr_cheers.gif" border="0" alt="[cheers]" />

Re: Tach Installation...
I do have another pic, both of these pics were taken by someone else...
Okay, well, my friend HackerJoe has a Camaro and I like how he mounted his. Take out your left AC vent cover. In there I think there is some factory metal. Joe welded a small bracket to that... voila, no drilling.
Mine, well the trim piece around the dash comes off. I drilled into that. I can always buy another trim piece. It's pretty sturdy too, it does not rock back and forth.
I have seen folks put the tach in the corner of the driver's side too.
