Default Bizarre stereo problem in my '98Z (long)

My used '98Z28 with 28,383 miles has the el cheapo cassette am/fm stereo system. I play cds using a cassette adapter and a Sony cd player. My problem is when I play a disc, the music sounds all crackly and distorted especially when playing it loud or with a lot of bass. But when I play the radio, everything's fine. I've checked my cd player, cassette adapter on another car and it sounds fine. I've also de-magnetized the z's cassette system.
Also: I just played Kid Rock for days and the music was all distorted and weird sounding, but when I put in some easy listening cd's it sounded fine with almost no crackling or distortion. But prior to putting in the Kid Rock, the easy listening stuff sounded all messed up, too!

Any advice stereo experts? Thanks <img src="gr_sad.gif" border="0">

While I may not be up on the speed of f-bodies, stereos are my stock and trade.

Lose the cassette adapter. They are inadequately shielded from RF interference (ref. engine noise) and can cause SEVERE distortion. Pick up an inexpensive after-marker CD changer, which runs through your antenna link. You'll notice a world of difference.

If you're really into the sound, a replacement is in order. The Soxy X-Plod, Sony Moble ES, Clarion ProAudio, and Kenwood eXcelon are fantastic.

Okay! That sounds like the problem! I'll see if I can get that diff. type of adapter. Meantime, I've gotten used to the crackly sound but in the future I'll probably get an in-dash cd. Bummer though, cuz I'd really like to keep the car as close to stock as possible. Just nostalgic I guess since they won't be built after this year.
