You are better off removing the padding on the back of the stock carpet.
I'm not sure how much weight you're going to save though. I took mine out last week to do a complete Raam Mat installation. The carpet doesn't seem to weigh all that much...maybe 15 pounds? Lightweight carpet or OEM carpet without the padding might save you half of that.
Is it worth it? Not too me...unless you are removing lot's of other stuff anyway.
Using the old "100 pounds of weight savings equates to about .1 in the 1/4 mile", I always thought the best savings came by way of using lighter wheels. A savings of 3 - 5 pounds per wheel will do more for the car than reducing the weight by 100 pounds. And, it'll increase the looks of the car without adversely affecting the safety or comfort.
