Please help me. I have had an electrical short in my car since last year, The dash lights go totally out and the ip dimmer 5amp fuse keeps blowing. I have had it to 3 dealers and no one can track the problem down. Please has anyone had this problem with there car???
ps: I am the original owner and it has never been in any accidents.

Re: Please help me. Has the dash been out of the car for any reason? To replace a heater core? It sounds like you have a dead short in the instrument cluster or a wire is pinched under the dash. It could also be a bad rheostat (dimmer switch) Has this been replaced?

Re: Please help me. They did replace the dimmer/headlight switch once, The dash was only out to put white face gauge overlay (3 years ago) in. I was very carefull when i had the dash out.
Re: Please help me. Troubleshooting electrical shorts is extremely difficult at best but here is what I would reccommend:
Start pulling the dash apart just like you did for the gage cluster install. You will need to carefully dissasemble most of your dash on the drivers side and inspect all wiring for signs of wear or chafing. My guess is you have a wire or wires or maybe even a contact that is pinched or out of alignment and over a period of time (possibly a year or two) the insulation has worn off. Just take your time and look at each piece carefully. You should find the problem.
On a side note, do you have any aftermarket electronics in the car? I know that sometimes, when an aftermarket radio is installed, they use the dimmer wire instead of the headlight circuit to wire the lights for the radio...
