Start pulling the dash apart just like you did for the gage cluster install. You will need to carefully dissasemble most of your dash on the drivers side and inspect all wiring for signs of wear or chafing. My guess is you have a wire or wires or maybe even a contact that is pinched or out of alignment and over a period of time (possibly a year or two) the insulation has worn off. Just take your time and look at each piece carefully. You should find the problem.
On a side note, do you have any aftermarket electronics in the car? I know that sometimes, when an aftermarket radio is installed, they use the dimmer wire instead of the headlight circuit to wire the lights for the radio...
