Repairing Paint Chips
Car has 6-7 M&M size paint chips on the lower portion of the left rear door. And One more chip on the crease of my rear bumper. The sealer is visible. I am looking for the process i need to follow in order to put a coat of clear over the spots i touch up. Here is what i have come up with... please chime in and correct me/improve my process.
I cleaned the spots thoroughly and let dry. Put two coats of touch up paint on the spots. Here is what i plan on doing:
Wet sanding with 2000:2500:3000. Going over areas with compound then polish to clear up the sanded areas on the outside touch up.
After this, will i be able to put a coat of clear on the area i touched up? Of course i will mask the area off. Then wet sanding to blend it all in. I just need to know what is required before i can put a coat of clear on.
If you want to have a "perfect" touch-up...you will need to lightly sand the area to be touched up...just enough to smooth down the edges. you can use the 1500 wet or dry for this...next clean the area with denatured alcohol or eurathane paint reducer.....after it is dry (about 1-2min. later) use an airbrush to lightly "build" the color back to match (tip:you can lightly spray some reducer on the edges to "melt" them in)...let that "tach off"...usually about 15-30 min. depending on temp, humidity & reducer...then use the airbrush to spray the clear coat on (tip: to keep from making "hard edges with the tape...fold the tape back about half way so the sticky side is showing a little) you can also use the reducer trick to "melt"in the edges....remove masking...let cure...the longer the beter...but at least 12hr. then smooth out the edges with wet sanding ,rubbing compound, polishing compound....if done correctly you will not be able to tell there was ever a ding.
if you don't have an airbrush or know how to use one....I suggest sticking to your plan "A". just make sure you re-cleane the area after you polish it before adding the clear. rubbing compounds and clear coat don't get along very well....good luck!
