Looking to upgrade my map & dome lights. I've seen where people have upgraded these, but I can't seem to find the correct LED size, or how to take the map light apart. Anyone have any pics or info. would be appreciated.
I used a flat head screwdriver to pop my map lights out. Used 2 13led 194's on maps, cause I wanted them to be bright, they hit the lens but the lens still covers them, you can go with less leds like 5 and they fit just the same. Used a 561 for the dome. Got them off of v-leds.com
I replaced the map lights with white LEDs, check the bulb type on here or on sylvania.com ..I don't remember. And I replaced the dome light with a festoon-LED bulb.. but any time I would hit bumps it would fall out, and it eventually fried.
Yea, it had a different bulb size in the map, but I had a 194 laying around and it fit so thats what size I went with. Some places said it was interchangable with the size that was in there. With my dome, I got one of the festoon bulbs and had to bend where it holds in place to make it stay.
When I replaced my headliner, I wired in a real 70's style round dome lamp and located it just behind the front seats, powered by the 'rear' dome lamp feed. It looks stock (as it is a GM part) and actually lights up the interior when I turn it on!
Oh, and I put in a 3rd gen rear view mirror too - with switches for the two 'map' lights - that unit works better than my Formula's original lights too!
Just get creative, and make it look (almost) stock - it makes people scratch their heads!
