Default Headlight removal

I would like to paint the headlight buckets black on my '00 SS but i'm not sure what the best way is to remove them. Any suggestions? <img border="0" alt="[judgement]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_judge.gif" />

Kevin, I'm not sure what you mean by "headlight buckets" unless that means where the headlights sit. If you're just looking on how to remove the headlight assembly this post might help https://ls1tech.com/ubb/ultimatebb.p...=002164#000003 , I find it much easier to pull out the fascia when removing the headlights. I hope this helps some but if not I'm sure someone will come along with the right answer, good luck.

It is fairly easy. There is only one 10mm bolt to remove, it is under the top metal bracket connecting to the back of the headlight. Then slide the head light to the center of the car, and the best way I can describe it is "twist" the light assembly out. Oh and of couse disconnect the light bulbs.

Installation if the reverse. The headlights come out easier than they go in, because you wind up sort of fighting the black gasket thingy.

Hope that helps.

Thanks guys, I had removed the one bolt but it seemed as if there might be more to it because it was still very tight in there and I didn't want to break anything.

Be sure to tape off the painted part right under the headlight. You might scratch it trying to get the headlights out. Trust me, I know. I just pulled mine out 3 or 4 days ago to install clear corners. I didn't tape anything off and I paid the price.

Another good idea is to wear Mechanix Wear glove's, there can be some sharp edges on the headlight assembly and surrounding area.

Here it is in full:
---------------------------------------
Here's how I've done them in the past.

1. Remove the five black push-in pins from the top of the fasica. This will allow you to pull the fascia out while sliding the headlight assembly towards the center of the car. By pulling out the fascia it will give you that needed extra room to pull the headlight out, I remove the headlight at a slight angle.

<img src="http://groups.msn.com/_Secure/0MgCdFFkRxaXjd8RfLVcO6w!Qee02lhdzGQjyMH2RW6Ihj083l x9EiRyFt33vSyFHA1ZUz7tqV5dxbmFfwXOAdg/C5.jpg" alt=" - " />

2. Remove the 10mm bolt from the back of the headlight, no other bolt should be removed to take the headlight assembly out.

<img src="http://groups.msn.com/_Secure/0MgB0cFcRZ6V5fuxtaNMIu04SNU9eLxrN4B2wtdW41uz0kYZOZ 06dq4NObgIRjLx1k2HDLBy1ybjRVl962oa3SQ/C3.jpg" alt=" - " />

3. I like to use masking or duct tape EXCELLENT ADVICE!!! on the fascia around the headlight area, this will help protect the paint on the fasia. Looking at the back of the headlight you'll notice two tabs, when re-installing the headlight make sure you slide the two tabs in the proper area. The blue tape shows the tabs.

One thing I forgot to mention is you need to disconnect or remove the headlight bulbs before you pull the headlight assembly out, if you remove the bulbs do not touch the bulb with your fingers.
---------------------------------------------

Thanks again AL!!!!!

I just finished the job and I must say it was pretty easy though I can see how it could be very difficult if you do not pull out the top of the fascia. I personally did not need to use protective tape because I had plenty of clearence.

It looks great. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="gr_grin.gif" />

Thanks for the tips guys!

Andy, thanks for re-posting that, hopefully it will be of some help to guys in the future.

Joe, I wonder how you guessed it was Teds car. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="gr_grin.gif" />

Kevin, glad to hear it worked out for you, I still would suggest the use of tape on the fascia to anyone planning on doing this.
