As far as pads go, in my honest opinion after a lot of reading and hands on experience all you will need is two pads.
Pads- Orange pad for your first run (more aggresive pad) A white pad for your last polishing step that will bring back the shine that was lost on the first run with the more aggressive orange pad combo.
Compounds/Polishers- I use the Menzerna Super Intensive Polish w/orange pad. This combo has a good bite and very good correcting abilities for removing swirls and scratches with minimal micromaring. Second polish that I use is the Menzerna Final Polish w/white pad to really bring the shine back and correct the minor marring(scratching) caused by the more aggresive orange pad combo used previously.
A new combo that's very popular is the Meguiars M105 w/orange pad and M205w/ white pad (simply replaces the menzerna polishes I mentioned above) A LOT of people have claimed very good results with the M105/205 combo and very user friendly to boot.
Waxes/Sealents- I have waxes from $5-$50 and after using a Sealent, I will never go back to waxing again. I use Zaino for sealing/protecting the corrected finish and I cant be more happy with the results and the durability of it. After a week or two I noticed that wax doesn't nearly bead water off as good as Zaino does after a month! To put it simply. Sealents outlast waxes.
Zaino Z2
Zaino Z5
The above is MY personal combo that has worked great for ME. I don't want this to be taken too seriously or to have a wrong interpretation of detailing/correcting paint. Everyones different and likes different combos for their cars. This one worked well for me and still does.
I hope this is of some help to you. Dont hesitate to PM me if you have any more questions.
Cheers.
