Default Polishing tips?

My cars down for a motor rebuild and I wanted to start polishing a few things (a/c condenser, valve covers, and a few others), can you use a standard 6" bench grinder with the polishing wheels or is a drill the best way? I dont want to buy that $400 machine to do it. Also what about compounds, what compound is good for what?

Drills do not spin fast enough. 3450 rpm is where you need to be at.

On the valve covers you will have to sand them with 400 grit paper. Then start with a spiral wheel with tripoli compound till it is smooth. Then use a loose wheel, and white rouge compound for the shine.

The ac condenser can be done the same way but no sanding is necessary, it is pretty smooth. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="gr_grin.gif" />
