How to remove corrosion?

How to remove corrosion? I read the sticky about keeping wheels stuff in the wheel section, but that seemed like it was about pictures of wheels and suggestions. And this is about detailing them, and this is the detailing section. If this is the wrong section, sorry and feel free to move it, but it seemed like the best section to ask about it.
There's some corrosion on the lips of my rear wheels, and I was wondering what the best method of removing it would be. I tried Turtle Wax polish and rust remover with no avail, and also Eagle One Never-Dull. But, neither of them worked. I'm assuming that I'll need something a little more abrasive, but wanted to ask about it, before I started screwing with it and messing up a wheel. Here's a picture of the corrosion.

Not really sure what it is. Fairly sure it's just some sort of corrosion. I've tried about everything I'm comfortable with to remove it, but it's still there. I tried some light wetsanding with 2000 grit even, and it helped a little, but not much. I'm scared to go any more abrasive really, because I don't want to mess the wheels up and dull the lips.

If they are polished aluminum you might have to go pretty abrasive to remove the spots. 1000 grit, 1500 grit, then 2000 grit and then rub away with some good aluminum polish should do the trick.
Turtle wax polish and rust remover is most likely for chrome, you could go get some high quality aluminum polish and try it first before going to more abrasive sand paper.

My buddy who used to detail cars said it's a flaw between the metal and clearcoat, and that I'll probably have to strip the clear off them and polish it real good, and either keep up on polishing them well, or just re-clear them.
Can you feel the corrosion with your fingers? If you could I would assume that the corrosion would be on the surface. If not, I would assume the corrosion would be between the clear coat and the wheel. If the corrosion was on the surface I would probably try soda blasting.
