Default DDM HID - doesn't always fire up every time?

This is odd, sometimes my DDM HID low beam don't always fire up. One will fire but the other will not. This seems to happen every other week? Anyone know the cause of this I wonder if it means I need a relay...

The red wire with the fuse(#3/#7)goes to the positive side of the battery.
The black wire(#4) should be grounded to the chassis.
Basically, the male plugs(#1 and #2) from the harness is the power plug that will feed power to the ballasts.
However, you should have only one female plug(#5). That female plug has to be plugged into the passenger stock light harness.

Link I pasted on previous post is the exact same relay harness I used and is the one pictured above.

Install is so easy even a caveman can do it.

i have the same problem on my E36. You either need a power relay harness as pictured above, or you have a bad ballast. I had a bad ballast. Change your ballasts from one side to the other and see if the problem follows one of them. If that doesnt work then try your bulbs.

I said in my OP that this only happens once every other week or so. My ballasts and bulbs are fine - for now.

Do I need 1 relay or two? It looks like I only need one. After examining the relay, how do the headlights know when to turn on if the only power supply is straight from the battery? There's no input switch that tells the relay to start drawing power? Like an 85/86/87/87a/30 relay.

It is my understanding (based on info shared via ls1tech and my engineering background) that the HID ballasts have a high draw upon start up (cold fire up). After they run for a little while, they warm up and do not have such a high draw anymore ... So it is during these start up periods they need more draw than the stock harness can provide ... even though stock is 55W and you have a 55W HID, that is the draw when the HID's are warmed up.

Someone said that you can lose a ballast by not running the relay if you're having problems. I guess that really could go either way, depends on design and components used. I intend to run a relay just so I can have my headlights every time. I could wire in an 85/86/87/87a/30 relay rated for 40 AMPS for cheap but the relay harness in ebay is like $8.50 shipped...

Your terminology here threw me off. I believe plugs #1 & #2 are male and plug #5 is female. The #5 female plug goes into the passenger stock light harness - this is what tells the relay to turn on and off.

Thanks!!

It was bugging me, I was trying to figure out how the relay would know to turn on and provide power to the ballasts ... A good write-up, regardless of the little typo
