DDM HID - doesn't always fire up every time?

Recently installed one myself.

The red wire with the fuse(#3/#7)goes to the positive side of the battery.
The black wire(#4) should be grounded to the chassis.
Basically, the male plugs(#1 and #2) from the harness is the power plug that will feed power to the ballasts.
However, you should have only one female plug(#5). That female plug has to be plugged into the passenger stock light harness.

Do I need 1 relay or two? It looks like I only need one. After examining the relay, how do the headlights know when to turn on if the only power supply is straight from the battery? There's no input switch that tells the relay to start drawing power? Like an 85/86/87/87a/30 relay.

Someone said that you can lose a ballast by not running the relay if you're having problems. I guess that really could go either way, depends on design and components used. I intend to run a relay just so I can have my headlights every time. I could wire in an 85/86/87/87a/30 relay rated for 40 AMPS for cheap but the relay harness in ebay is like $8.50 shipped...
