Default need some LED help: LEDs in stock cd player

I'm in the middle of a complete LED swap on my SS's interior and am about to tackle the odometer and cd player. i've got the head unit stripped down to the circuit board and can see the bulbs i need to replace, but i don't really know how to determine what's positive and what's negative...? anybody got any idea how i can be sure before i start soldering bulbs in backwards?

Thanks,
Ben

I don't think it matters which way LED's are?

does it not matter? i was under the impression that it does...i mean they have a cathode and an anode side. i always thought they would work one way and not the other. thats why i asked, the bulbs aren't pulg & play, they solder in, so i want to get it right if it DOES matter.

LEDs are 1-way. If you apply the voltage in the wrong direction, they get really bright and then don't work again. . .

leds will only work one way, either they will light up or not. not going to burn them out hooking them up the wrong way. dont forget you need resistors on the leds so they dont burn out from over powering them, they only run on about 1.8-2.2 volts. as fas as pos and neg on the headunit, i took the headunit and plugged it back into the car with the lights turned on while using a voltmeter to mark a pos side on each light. also what size leds are you using? i think only the 3mm leds will fit into the front plate when you go to put it back on.

yeah i've got some 3mm leds and some 680ohm 1/4watt resistors in the mail.

let me ask you this: how exactly do i tell positive from negative with a voltmeter? after all the stuff i've done to my car and others in the past (including wiring), not once have i ever used one in my life

lol, fair question imo..

I did my odometer and I think the diode went on the 'bottom' connection after you pull the amber leds out. There was a writeup that (while it wasnt very good) had a couple pointers.

I wound up doing 2 white LEDs, and then my ODO lit up and didnt display (which started a series of unfortunate events for me..)... but ive been enjoying the updates on your ss, like to see what you come up with here.

BTW someone kept asking about coil reloc mounts and i kept referencing you but couldnt remember your name. Are you still dealing with those, or have you moved out of the engine bay now?

i took a pic of the odometer circuit board and then scribbled around on it the way i understand its supposed to go...does it look right:

As far as coil brackets go, i finished those quite some time ago. they're on the car now. i just re-used my red MSD wires but i plan on switching to black in the near future. the brackets turned out awesome i think. i powdercoated them semi-gloss/satin black and used stainless hardware so they look great when you notice them but don't stand out if you aren't looking for them. i ran out and snapped some new pics with the driod:

EDIT: here's a shot of them uninstalled, forgot i had it:

Mine has been changed to red leds. Gotta hate the ugly stock yellow

What color are you going with?

Everything inside the car will be blue LEDs...odometer, gauges, A-pillar gauges, HVAC panel, and radio. The rest of the interior lighting is all cool white LEDs.

Make sure to grind down the tips of the leds (I used like 600 grit sandpaper) so they are flat, they spread light more evenly that way..
