They "work" yes but they aren't proper. HIDs belong in a projector or reflector designed for HID only, not in a halogen reflector as it isn't focused right and scatters light everywhere. People comment they almost don't need their brights anymore, you know why? Because the average 35W HID bulb has about the same light output as your high beam halogen bulb. So in essence you may as well drive around with your high beams on - oncoming traffic will love you for it

But this is also a topic that has been beaten to death, with plenty of evidence to back it up, yet there are those here that insist it is just fine

HID in a Halogen reflector = BAD
because it scatters light where it shouldn't be often producing a beam pattern like a high beam with more light than the original halogen high beam which makes matter worse.

HID in a Halogen projector = MAYBE
This depends on the projector. H7, H9/H11, 9005/9006 projectors often accept HID well (not all, but many, especially newer ones). Not as well as a real HID projector but some are still pretty good. Cheap ebay projectors are all other the place. Some are OK, others are crap. Some H1 projectors also handle HID well, many don't. H3 projectors waste the light and don't light up the road well.

I've seen pictures over on HID Planet and other places of all kinds of setups and various projectors (mostly OEM HID projectors, but some were Halogen projectors). Three OEM halogen projectors that come to mind that handle HID well are the later Miata H7, and the Acura MDX H11 (which I think is also on some Honda Accords from the same years), and the later H7 Valeo (my memory on this last one is a bit foggy though).
