Re: Painting Rear Axle
I pulled my axle out. It was easy to do. And that way I could go through the step of cleaning with wax/grease remover, then Metal Ready which got rid of all the rust, and then painted. I did this because I was pulling it to do a rear end rebuild and switch to 4.10 gears.
If I was going to paint it again I would still pull it so as to do it right.

Re: Painting Rear Axle
I'm about to paint my rear axle with POR15 as well. Great stuff! Thing is, I took my rear axle off of the car cause of the suspension mods I'm doing. So the painting is probably gonna be easy but reassembly will most definitely be a task.
I'm going to assume that you want to leave your rear axle attached. If you haven't already tried... you should be able to get enough leverage by jacking up the car and supporting the car by the chassis with jack stands and not the axle. This will alleviate tension on the springs and should seperate the axle from the underbody enough to gain access to the top of the axle housing so that you can finish painting.

Painting Rear Axle
For those that have painted the rear axle with POR 15, how did you reach the top of the pumpkin. I have painted mine and BTW POR15 makes it look great, but the top of the pumpkin is very difficult to reach. Any tips?

Re: Painting Rear Axle
A little bit of POR 15 goes a VERY long way. Bought a PINT and did the entire rear axle, and front spindles with TWO coats! Neat stuff, but be warned DO NOT GET IT ON YOUR SKIN!!!! It won't come off! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="gr_eek2.gif" />

Re: Painting Rear Axle
Thanks for the replys. I had it on jackstands (axle drooping) and wheels off. I guss my arms are short. Mayber a longer handle on my brush.
I will wait for warmer weather to put a 2nd coat and finish it up. Again thanks

POR15 is great stuff.
I used it a while ago to touch up spots on a beater, and the rust never came back on that 1980 Bu.
I painted my 9" with etching primer and GM paint and it matches the car... www.ls1tech.com/psjpics

By sort of 'hugging' the pumpkin while lying down I was able to see everything that I had previously missed. It does take a little hand eye coordination and what Andy said...watch your skin!! I also used rubber dishwashing gloves. Have fun!!
