I have the the engine bay somewhat open for head/ cam swap and am wanting to clean all the accumulated grime/oil etc. stuck to the timing cover, around the oilpan, motor mounts etc. before I crack the engine open. I was thinking a bucket of water/dawn and a scrub brush and rag. or a big can of carb cleaner and rag. Would either be a good idea?
What have you guys done that works well or what do you suggest?

sorry for the confusion, its not opened up yet. intake, crank pulley, exhaust, radiator are all out and timing cover, valley cover and valve covers are all still in place.

The guy's at my dealer would pressure wash the whole bay(with it running) spray it down with AA and run it for about 10 min's, ive done this myself at a coin op car wash and it look's great if you need just a basic cleaning.
