Installed the h7 bulbs in my Formula
I had a headlight go out on Thursday. Well I was simply looking for a good factory style light solution. Apparently we have none. So I went ahead and grabbed a pair of Sylvania housings and a pair of the h7 xtravision bulbs. Took very little work to install them.
The factory style housings are pretty cheap. The bulb is caulked and has a very small screw holding it in place. Just a little work with a razor will remove enough of the caulking to see the screw. Once the screw is removed the bulb with a little motivation will come pretty easy.
The h7's are more rounded and while are pretty close to fitting will simply not go in as is. A dremel or even some tin snips (more messy obviously) will remove the little material that is needed to place the bulb in. I just simply added some clear silicone in a generous portion to keep the bulb nice and secure, as well as keep the housing tight to avoid moisture in the housing.
Wiring is pretty simple as well as the h7 pigtails are only like 5-6 dollars. I just used some quick splices ( I know I know.... I'm horrible with wiring. I hate dealing with it.) so that was very easy and also I can revert back to stock housings if I needed to.
Super simple deal really. Took maybe an hour or so once I got the parts and got to work.
The results are basically what I expected and hoped for. Much more "white" and brighter lighting. Its not the high end projector lighting, just a pretty decent step up from stock. Its about $50 in parts and very little real modding. I could put the car back to stock in all of 15 min's.
I will try and get some pics up if anyone is really interested. Also curious if anyone knows of a better h7 bulb or better type of bulb we could use for a similar conversion. I just kinda went with this without as much research as I probably should have but it came out very well for the investment.
Hella & Bosch also make housings, but they are more expensive.
I've done this mod before as well. The H7 bulb isn't really sealed all that well because they aren't intended to have their backsides exposed. They are designed to be inside a sealed housing. Eventually water got in my housings and a bulb connector melted. Its not worth the effort considering the other housings options available.
