cleaning my engine???

cleaning my engine??? Anybody have a good way of cleaning the grit and grime off of an aluminum LS1 block and heads, I tried some wheel cleaner in the rear area to sample it and it turned it a funny white color., any help would be appreciated...
I don't know but I wouldn't try degreaser and a garden hose. I was careful not to spray water at the front near the intake manifold yet water still managed to get under the intake manifold and it finished killing one of the knock sensors.
Now I'm looking at having to pull the intake off and change both knock sensors and the wiring harness.
There are many who have washed their engines many times with no ill effects. I guess I was just unlucky my first time. Just know that there is a possibility to screw something up.
