Default Switching Gauge Clusters

I want to do the MOD where you switch the odometer on a camaro over to blue but I'm scared I might screw it up.

http://www.ledgauges.com/id26.html

Is it okay to buy a cluster at a jyard and do the MOD on it, then test it out on my actual camaro to see if it worked?

Is a gauge cluster vehicle specific?

Anybody ever switch out gauge clusters on a camaro?

I was wanting to switch out just this part from the cluster
