Default ASR & Fog LED MOD

I so failed.....

I even switched the LEDs around. It would light up then go out. Other times it would just flash when I turned on the fogs.

Anybody wanna make some money?

Let me mail my stuff to you and hook a fella up....

Due to the overwhelming response, I better try this myself...

Does this MOD require any resistors for the led's that go on in the asr and fog lamps? Has anyone done this or knows anything about electronics to tell me how many ohm's the resistors should have?

I remember using a resistor when I did mine, but couldn't tell you what size I used...been a while. You definitely can't just solder the LED in without one as you have found out.

You definitely need a resister. You are feeding the LED too much power and frying it.

LEDs typically work in the 1.5 - 5v range (depending on size and color).

What color LEDs are you using? What are the specs of the LEDs you bought? Look at the input voltage and current draw ranges of the LED. Take those number and use an LED calculator to tell you which resistor you need to get that LED to work with the cars 14V operating voltage.

Here is an example using the specs of a 5mm white LED I found on Google.

14V Source Voltage (Car)
2V Forward Voltage (LED)
30ma Current Draw (LED)
Recommended Resistor: 470 Ohms, 1W

Here is the LED Calculator I used:
http://led.linear1.org/1led.wiz

Those are conservative numbers to make life easier for the LED (using the lower end of the example LED's specs range).

Using that same example LED, but tweaking the numbers slightly for brighter output (still in the spec range of the example LED, but at the top end of the range which could shorten life).

13.5V Source Voltage (Car)
2.2V Forward Voltage (LED)
30ma Current Draw (LED)
Recommended Resistor: 390 Ohms, 1W

So for this example LED 390 - 470 Ohm 1W resistor should work out fine.

Take a look at the specs of the LEDs you bought and use the LED Calculator to determine the appropriate resistor to use.

Also, LEDs are directional. One side is positive, the other side is negative. They only work in one direction.

Thanks VIP1. I knew something was screwy went they kept popping.

Recommended Resistor: 470 Ohms, 1W (Radio Shack?)

Will a resistor fit under that ASR and FOG light switch dome or does it need to go somewhere else?

here is what my asr switch looked like when i was done, didnt take any of the fog light switch but yes the resistors will fit inside the switch.

Thats tight as a ........

Which side do the resistors connect to?

I always put mine on the positive side, but it doesn't matter which side. Just an ocd thing for me to always have it on that side.

The recommended resistor is the one that is correct for the LED you are using.

What are the specs of the LED you are using? Namely current draw (ma) and Forward Voltage (Vf) and any other listed specs?

470 Ohms 1W isn't necessarily correct. The specs of the LED make a big difference and are very important in choosing the correct resistor.

Just PM me a list (right size LED's and resistors) and I'll send it all to ya, to include a address
(might be a lil something else extra in there)

You just need someone to put in the LEDs? Is it the calculation you need help with or the actual soldering? If you possess skills, I can help with the material selection.

if youre doing a single led, the whites are generally 3.2-3.5v with a 20-30mA draw so if youre doing a single led, a 1/4watt 330-390ohm resistor will work... you can go higher on the resistor if you want and all it will do is underdrive it.. Id go with a single led and 390ohm, that will be safe... Im assuming youre doing two single series leds. one for interior illumination and the second for on/off illumination... i would put a 440ohm 1/4watt on the interior light so its not so bright and a 390 on the on/off led... it will be brighter than the interior led will but not by a whole lot... make sure you use flux, 30watt soldering iron with a sharp, clean tip...

If I use a red LED, will that matter?

Say this one...

560ohm 1/4watt will be nominal voltage. you will need two of each, one on each line.. that led only uses 2.2v and resistors arent offered in small enough increments to make a difference between running it at 2.6 max to a 1.8 minimum.. a 560 is what is recommended for both because its tolerance covers that spread.. both leds will look the same when lit.. 8k mcd is pretty bright... if i were you , Id do a 3mm 5kmcd red for the illumination led and a 5mm 8kmcd for the on/off led... but the 5mm red youre looking at will be just fine... sand off the tops of them before you install them so they have more of a glow rather than water clear light.. trust me, it will look much better..

No wonder I failed so bad....

They never talk about or show resistors (pics) in all the LED MOD threads I seen before, or I never really paid attention.

The pics from stealth355tpi are great in making me understand.

Thanks again everybody...

One more quick one...

Does it matter how I set the resistor? Do they have a + or - side? Or does it just need to be in the loop per say?
