Its not really a transparent "function" persay, its a pasted picture of the engine bay, with a mask added to the picture, than airbrushed the edges of the engine bay and finally make the layer's opacity a bit lower

Well, I just did that real quick to how it would
look. The picture I had of the engine was way
huge compared to the car pic. I just did a quick
resize, not really worrying about being properly
sized for the car. I'm just tryin to learn more
