Default Is a paint booth totally necessary?

If someone wanted to paint just a single item like a bumper cover, etc, could they still achieve excellent results if it's not done in a paint booth?

I'm sure there are precautions that could be taken to alleviate dust, etc.

well its not neccessary, but from experience.

A well LIT and CLEAN environment is the key to a good paint job.

You just need to make sure there is nothing floating in the air; your safe for the most part. Even one little strand of hair stands out like a sore thumb under paint & clear coat so make sure your in a clean room.

I've heard of guys painting show winning jobs in their yards, but if you don't have much experience, if any at all, you'll want to take all precautions. If you've never painted before, the use of a paintbooth is highly encouraged.

Levi, just make a small sectioned off "room" with some celophane or rolled plastic walls, and wet the ground down alot to help trap dust. Should be okay for painting a bumper cover.

Let me add one more suggestion to that, cut out a small section of the plastic so you can place a cheap box fan on the floor. Set it on high and you should turn out nice, remember you can use micro sandpaper to remove and small defect then polish it out with 3M Finesse-it II Finishing Material ( this is what we used at the G.M plant I retired from ).

yea, what Tony said.. its more of a garbage in/garbage out.. you cant have a good paint job if dust, particles and even bugs are landing on your wet paint.. colorsanding can take out some of the stuff that will get on there.

I bought a cheap tent, covered the windows with filter paper, and attached my shop vac to the last window. Hung some plastic drop cloth inside with spring clamps and put a couple of flourescent drop lites inside. Made a great paint booth and wound up with a fun tent for the kids when I was done.

9Ball and Darkage, I had those plans in mind. I may just paint some small stuff, like headlight doors, etc first to see how it does. I have some buddy's car that are in need of some touch ups
