Default a REAL scratch!!!

so somehow, driving down the road, i get a 2.5 inch scratch right above the passenger side door handle. it looks like a key ran across it. i honestly don't understand where it came from, because it wasn't there when i left, and i never got out of the car until i got back and saw it again

anyway, i colorx'ed it twice, and tech-waxed it twice. it's missing paint, it's that deep of a scratch, but i figured the colorx and tech wax wouldn't hurt. sure enough, it helped some. but it's not gone by any means. do you know of any product i can use to hide it? any color'ed like wax that fills things like that in? what about turtle wax polishing compound? i used that on my white car for a scratch, and it hid it well, but i also don't know if that stuff is abrasive, or will tarnish or damage the paint when it's applied over the colox/tech wax that i use? what advice can you give me? thanks a bunch!

Get ready to shell out some cash if you want it fixed right. Find a good body shop. I just got quoted over $400 bucks to get a 1 inch scratch fixed on mine.

i can't feel the scratch on my car when i touch it, so it's not THAT deep. but my car is NBM, and where the scratch is is white, so i dunno really. can anyone tell me how deep it is from THAT description?

Can you feel it when you run your finger nail across it? If so its in the paint and theres no cure for it.

no, i sure cannot. that's why i don't think it's that big of a deal. it sure does look bad though, and none of my formulation of waxes was making it disappear, although they all seemed to contribute to a slight decrease in it's obviousness. maybe that was just me thinking about it though

Get some 3-M Finesse-it II Finishing Material compound, you may need to go to a automotive paint supply store to find this. If scratch didn't go thru the clear coat this should work, good luck.

High speed buffing should take it out no problem as long as it's not through the paint.

Maybe it's not a scratch, could be something painted white touched your car...also when the clear coat gets scratched it kinda looks white but not white white.

How about a picture of the scratch to help better understand what the scratch looks like.

Is it just breaking the clear coat, in the primer or down to the panel itself?

If it's just breaking the clear you can always put a little in the scratch if it's that deep, then compound and polish it off and be fine.

If it's down to the primer, do the above process expect add paint then clear.

If it's down to the panel you can take a chance, it's easy enough.

A little clear coat, apply it with the tip of a sewing needle or a tooth pick.

I use a 3M compound for my own use. It can be purchased locally and it's just about the only brand I can find (I use other 3M products and like them anyhow).

Take a pic, maybe you can just compound the surronding area and blend the clear over the scratch.

the pics won't come out. the scratch may be too light

but i can feel something with my fingernail, even though it's VERY slight. it doesn't look like it went through the paint though, but it's still white? i don't get it...

Whats not to get? Do you have a scratch or not? If so... sorry, your car has a scratch. I didn't think identitifying a scratch would be so hard...

you'd be suprised. i think it's just through the clear coat, and since i don't have any other NBM cars with a complete scratch to gauge by, i really don't know what a scratch through the paint would look like on this car. on my white car, scratches were black. on my car now, this particular scratch is white, so that's why i really don't know. no big deal. thanks for all the help.
