Default Taillight pain removal

The last owner painted the tail lights with some crappy black... spray paint? I'm guessing spray paint. Anyways, what is a safe way to remove it without damaging the plastic of the tail lights. And how do i go from there to making them look glossy and tinted like these?

if it was done with VHT nightshade (the most common way and is a spray can) then my understanding is a little gasoline on a rag will take it right off but you will still need to polish the lights afterward.

other options are Goof Off (in the spray can), brake cleaner, carb cleaner, just be sure to do it OFF and AWAY FROM the car as many of these methods can damage the paint on the car.

If they're really dark just sand until it gets to the darkness you want. Then wetsand and polish.

Thanks guys, I'll give it a shot and see what happens. Worst case scenario I mess them up and I'll just buy some that have been professionally done.

You can take laquer thinner and it will take it off too just don't let it sit on the lights long. Those tail lights above are most likely done with tinted clear coat at a body shop!

Depends on how they are done. If they aren't flaking or anything and you want a smoked look you'd just be wasting time and money stripping and repainting them. The only way to tell if it's unsalvagable is by looking at them, but since we can't I'm just gonna assume it's like most VHT jobs. Most VHT jobs look crappy because they are flat, dull, and riddled with orange peel. You can fix all that with sanding and polishing...which will also get you to the level of tint OP seems to be looking for.

Camaro tail lights are super cheap. I'd just pick up some new ones and sell the old ones for $10 in the classifieds.

I found several sets for $25-40 a side in salvage yards near me. Walk in with $50 cash somewhere that has a set and they'd likely take it.
