Default Manual Console Delete

I can't seem find any threads on doing a "clean" console delete. Anyone have any pics?

Basically what i'm after is going for the "old school" look of just having a shifter and the e-brake handle with a good looking shifter boot. A few reasons being that i'm tired of my creaky pile of crap GM console, the cup holder is worthless in every sense of the word, and I kind of like the look and feel of the shifter being by itself. It feels like old school muscle to me I guess.

So a couple of questions. Where can I get carpet that has no cutouts in it and where can I get some "attractive" boots for the shifter and the e-brake?

Most aftermarket carpets come uncut, may want to make a call and make sure before making a purchase though. Not sure of any boot info, but I think the car will look strange without a console at all. Post some pictures if you do it though.

most classics had the parking brake the way most pickups do (foot pedal in the driver footwell), if you've ever had the console out you would see how hard it would be get a simple boot that would cover the parking brake setup.

One thing to consider before ditching the console entirely is upgrading to a 97-02 style console. Its much less clunky than the 93-96 type and the cup holders are awesome, both of them. Its bolts in just fine. Otherwise like mentioned, most aftermarket carpet is not cut in the console area giving you freedom to cut where you want. For the boot since theres no bolt in solution, I suggest scrouring the hot rod aftermarket for a rubber boot to your liking, then you will likely need to modify it to suit your needs. Should not be a hard task at all .

This! Look into a 97-02 console, they are much nicer and the cup holders actually work, haha! Plus, there are metal brackets under the console that stick up from the trans tunnel to support it and you'd have to cut them out to smooth the tunnel. Since most aftermarket companies expect for those lumps to be there due to the supports, you'll have weird bumps in your carpeting over those areas and it wouldn't sit flush. If you're really stuck on doing it though, I'm sure you can get a generic carpet kit and spend time forming it to meet your needs. It could take a while though for it all to sit right, especially with our weird converter hump.

ive been think about going without a console as well for a while now, i think it would look cool if done right. i bet you can find a generic shifter boot that could work online and well as a boot for the e-brake handle. if you do it, be sure to post some pics! if i get bored over the winter i may give it a try

I want to make something custom eventually but I would like to have something shaped like the new ones with as deep a cupholer as possible to keep drinks out of the way of the shifter and make a cover for them that slides or just remove the cupholders and place pull out ones in the upper console or another place that will work

also keep in mind there is a airbag "shock" sensor hidden under there that would create a bulge in the carpet. I don't know if it would be safe to expose that to nothing but a layer of carpet protecting it from the impact of things falling on it.

Thanks for the suggestions guys! I actually have a 97+ console laying around that I wanted to install but it's really not in that good of shape. If I could get a nicer one for a good price I wouldn't mind.

I think I might go ahead and do it this fall though. I want to see if i'll like it or not. At least if I don't, it will be easy enough to put a console back in.

Another thing I considered was gettting some thin sound deadening to line the inside of the console, that should make it less creaky and a little stiffer feeling I think. They just feel so cheap in stock form.

That's one thing I don't care for, If my car wasn't a 6-speed I would delete the brake altogether for a cleaner look.

haven't looked at mine since the 6spd swap . I was thinking of the same thing. although finding a piece of aluminum plate to go over the air bag module and then glue a piece of leather to it to blend. I also took a little time and checked on how long the wiring harness was and was thinking of moving the air bag module under either the drivers seat or the passenger side. then also not cutting out tabs but hammer them flat or closer to the tunnel for attachment purpose. hurst makes oversize boots for shifter covers and I was going to bend the flange to match the. radius of the tunnel. I wanted to do this mod because I'm tall and reaching a short throw shifter was not a comfort option . when I row I don't want to reach into oblivion to change gears. a friend of mine put a piece of alum cleatplate over the air bag module looked industrial and kinda cool. you got me renewed interest in the subject might look at this in the wintertime. then I can change to a more laid back shifter stalk and not have to worry about banging the **** against the lid of console since NO ONE has interest in making a repop of the lid. let me know if you decide to pursue. the oldman......
