Really depends on if they currently have a clear coat on them, but in short, yes sanding the nicks out and polishing them is perfectly ok to do

Yep, if they have a clear coat on them, sanding that area will only remove the clear coat in that area and make your wheels look even worse. If there is no clear coat on the wheels at all, then go ahead and sand as much as you need to in order to get the wheels back to smooth again, and then proceed to polish them up. That's the beauty of a raw aluminum wheel. One quick way to tell if they are clear coated or polished is to take some metal polish, apply it to white sock, proceed to rub it on an area of the wheel, and if the polish/sock turns black, you have a raw aluminum wheel. If the polish does not turn black, the wheels have clear coat on them. If you want to strip the clear coat off the wheels, you can use a number of different products that will eat off the clear coat; aircraft stripper being one of them.

Removing the clear is very easy but putting a clear coat back on is best left for a powdercoat shop. I just stripped my wheels about a week ago. I used aircraft stripper and worked like a charm without damaging the rims.

I agree about having a professional put back on a clear coat if you decide to strip it, but if it were me, I'd strip the clear coat and roll with a polished wheel. No need for a clear coat on there if you're meticulous about keeping them clean. What I did when I had raw aluminum CCW wheels was polish them up with Adams metal polish (1 and 2) and then add a thin coat of wax over them to help seal in the polish. Companies also make a specific product to apply to raw aluminum wheels to seal the, but wax always worked well for me.

Did you find that adams #2 metal polish did much of a difference vs just using polish #1?

The reason i ask is because im doing the exact same thing, and polish #1 worked great, but i hardly saw any difference when i used polish #2.

I have a thread in adams forums about my rims but i havent updated it due to bad weather. I need to use some more powerful stuff or wet sand them cus the polish didnt get rid of some small imperfections.

I think the Adams 1 is more for removing minor oxidation/imperfections and Adams 2 is what you'd use on well prepped aluminum. I always used them together since I had them both, but one or the other would work just fine.

thats more or less what i imagined. Ill just clean up one wheel with adams polish #1 and tape a before and after part with polish #2. That should let me know how well polish #2 works.

Im glad im not the only one not afraid of running non coated polished aluminum rims
