DIY led light stand My 1000 watt dual halogen lights have served me well over the years, but it was time for them to go. They're heavy, bulky and if your looking at full days in the garage correcting paint, they're HOT. I got the idea for a LED stand from an old detailing thread awhile ago and forgot about it until recently after a conversation with a good friend who's a photographer. That led to a trip to a local camara shop. I paid $30 for a low line stand intended for camera lighting. It is plenty durable and at this shop anyways the next step up was close to $200. Next to get was a dual filament light socket adapter. My local store had one, but you can get it on Amazon as well for around $10-12. The most expensive part was the 2 1350 lumen led spotlights bought at lowes. I paid about $70 for the 2 Osram daylight spotlights.
It is more expensive than a typical halogen light stand but it just blows it away in every aspect you can think of. I was most shocked with how much better the led's were showing defects. The led's were showing a bit of marring from the compound/microfiber cutting disc the halogens were not. Overall it was just easier to see.
Individual on/off's. Both sockets are adjustable.
Folds up nice and compact which is a really important for me for travel/transport.
I had an Escalade this past weekend. I was really happy how high I could adjust this stand. It went up about 2 feet higher than the top of the SUV. Before I would have taken a single halogen and hung it or found something high to sit it on.
It was a little hard to capture how much better the LED light was as all I had was my iphone. The difference is much more apparent in person than the pics suggest. One other note, I did not bring my dual halogen stand to this job. I only had my single 1000 watt floor stand halogen. So to be fair in the pics I only turned on 1 LED spotlight. It was very hot the day I did this truck, so it was really awesome to not have lights next you acting as heat lamps.
Before any work. This dealer maintained/destroyed 2013 Escalade was just disgusting.
