Default Custom Projector Headlights

So I bought sonar projectors a long time back. Mainly b/c they were one of the only projector headlights on the market.

These came with Halos which I have never wired up, but kinda liked the idea that I could if I wanted to.

After several years of these on they started to bother me from an appearance standpoint. I didn't like the chrome inside and wanted a fully blacked out look. I wasn't sure how this would work as the halos are a clear/glass color.

After some thought, a few days work, some VHT nightshade, and some flat black, this is what I came up with:

Here they are stock and a few years old:

Baked them in the oven at 230 degrees for about 30-40 minutes each. I would do 20 or 30 minutes, pry on the lens a bit, then have to stick it back in. These lights seem to use a gray rtv silicon. They were a huge pain in the *** to get off.

Once apart there are just screws that hold everything together. I disassembled everything, sanded, cleaned, and hit with a Rustoleum flat black:

I took off each individual halo and sprayed them with VHT night shade. I still wanted the halos to come on should I want to wire them up, but didn't want any other color than black in the lens. VHT goes on rather chunky so I had to wait for them to dry, wetsand, compound and polish. Results came out great:

The lenses themselves had seen better days so I hit them with 500, 800, 1500 and 2100 grit paper (wet) then polishing compound and polish. After that I put a few coats of wax on to prevent any future yellowing. I'll prob put some zx2 on to seal it in as well.

I reattached the lens using silicone adhesive rtv and let sit overnight.

Along with the lights I VHT'd a set of clear corners that I took apart and resealed myself as then factory seals on these suck.

I also swapped out all of the exterior lights to LEDS.

It was getting late in the day when I got them in. I'll get some more pics tomorrow.

Although they look better on your black car, but....

You went through the trouble of opening those up, but didn't replace the projectors with something better?

Also, you painted the high beams black reducing their output significantly. They are pretty much useless now.

And that color of HID you have looks like 8000K+ which is bad for night driving.

Sorry to sound so negative.

The projectors are fine. They work awesome, no complaints and honestly I was debating changing out the whole headlight assembly anyway, so I wanted to see how they looked.

The lights are 6k, but thanks for your random guess.

High beams are useless with projectors.

I'm only trying to be helpful and honest although my approach can be direct at times.

Maybe your camera is pushing the color a bit, especially in comparison to the fog lights.

No, those high beams are still required unless you have bi-xenon projectors which have a shutter to give high beam. None of "Sonar" headlights for the Camaro do that.

So, yes you still need high beam, unless you only ever drive in well lit downtown areas and have perfect night vision and live in a state with no inspections. Or those projectors are glaring so bad that they put out a high beam pattern anyway. That last part is unlikely with those Sonar projectors unless something went wrong with them or you removed the cut-off shield. Ive seen night shots of them and they seem passable with Halogen and better with HID but still no comparison to a real HID projector.
