Default 98 WS6 - Replace Inner Window Sweep While Replacing Outer?

I have a 24xxx mile WS6 with March 1998 factory build date. Neither outer window sweeps ( felt ) make solid contact with the glass. In addition, the passenger piece is cracked. The inner sweeps currently appear ok. Investigation indicates there are at least 3 – screws fastening each outer sweep to the door, and maybe some clips also. Therefore, it appears inner door panel removal is necessary to replace the outer sweeps. If I replace my outer sweeps, would you suggest replacing the inner sweeps too as a preventative measure, since it appears the inner panel must be removed anyway?

Thanks.

My '98 was built the same month as yours, though I'm only at 17k miles. Odd that your outer sweep is already cracked at such low mileage, was the car stored outside in full sun for some period in it's history?

I wouldn't consider this a wear item for a low mileage garage queen, so if the inner ones are fine and the car isn't exposed to conditions that would cause further cracking then I personally wouldn't replace those.

Several members have reported issues with the aftermarket replacement sweeps (poor fit, poor mounting clips.) If you can find a nice set OEM ones, that would be best.

RPM WS6,

I have garaged it since I bought it in 2005 w/ ~17k miles. I do not know its storage history prior to my purchase. Believe it had two previous owners, a mother and her son. I am aware of the quality concerns with aftermarket. Have your inner door panels cracked? Mine have not nor have I observed any stress marks yet. Thanks.

Was the outer sweep cracked when you bought it? That just seems premature for an example with such low mileage. The ones on my '98 haven't even hardened yet - still soft and supple at 17k miles/18+ years old. In fact, the sweeps hadn't even cracked on my '02 car when I sold it at ~110k miles/12 years old. And that car sat outside every day, but I did try to keep it parked in the shade when possible.

As for the cracked door panels, that's a Firebird/TA specific issue so my '98 has not been subject to it.

Not that I noticed. That it has failed is of little curiosity to me. I simply want to fix it and anything else appropriate during the process. I appreciate your comments, though, and will look for and correct any apparent, abnormal factors that may have contributed to an early failure.
