Another engine cleaning question Right now I have a 5.3 I am in the process of cleaning. I've cleaned the valve covers and timing chain cover and most of the front of the engine. I would like to remove the intake and manifolds and get it cleaned really well so I can paint it. For the manifold holes I planned on stuffing rags in the holes and covering with duct tape before pressure washing. I even though about just doing it one side at a time and tilting the engine on its side so the water drops straight down off the head instead of running down the head. this will also keep me from the submerging the knock sensors. How did yall do yours?

Better ways to clean Go get a gallon of Purple Power, a spray bottle, and old tooth brush. Get dirty. Clean all the nooks and crannies. You might want to pick up some long handle pipe cleaners too. Rinse and repeat. Once you get everything clean, remove any loose rust or just plain nasty spots with maroon Scotch-brite pad. Use isopropyl alcohol or wax and grease remover. This may take a couple applications of cleaning and wiping clean. Also get a couple rolls of blue paper towels.
After everything is pretty clean, then remove the intake. Clean the area with an alcohol damped towel. You can also use the Scotch-brite in this area too. NO RAZOR BLADES!
If you do end up getting cleaner/water/alcohol down a cylinder, just remove the spark plugs and turn the engine over by hand. It will spit the fluid out without damage.
