Heat shield rattle
I am going crazy!!!
The heat shields on the back of the car for the muffler and over the axle pipe are making a noise like no tomorrow. The sound is actually like metal rubbing together, a loud chirping. I know it is the shields because I can put pressure on them and it stops. I have tried everything short of removing them to quiet them down.
Can I actually remove them and not worry or should I leave them and keep fighting the good fight until the noise stops? This is my daily driver so, I don't want things getting too hot back there!

I don't have any heat shields anywhere and a dumped exhaust! But for you see if the exhaust can be flexed out of the way by unbolting the clamps and twisting it tell it looks better! On a 98" there should be a metal gas tank so the heat shouldn't hurt anything but that is gas and I wouldn't try it!
Maybe the shield can be "flexed" with a BFH!

i had the same problem and all i did
1. find and mark the spot where rubbing is happining
2. remove heat sheild
3. pound the marked spot with a hammer to reshape the spot further away from the spot it is touching
4. test drive
I havent heard a noise since then, good luck

That sounds like a good method. I wouldn't remove any heat shields unless you absolutely had to do so.
You can fix anything with a hammer.
