Default Steering Wheel Discoloration

My car has 87k on it and the steering wheel has gray/whitish discoloration all around the outside cover. I thought this was probably skin oils that could be cleaned off, but nothing I've tried so far works. Anybody else figured out how to get the leather back to black without adding an aftermarket cover?

Today I was pleasantly surprised. I got some leather dye and I figured that the best prep for the steering wheel would be rubbing alcohol. You guessed it, as I started wiping the discloloration started disappearing. I guess there was no alcohol in the cleaners I tried. Cleaned the whole wheel with the alcohol and finished up with 3M leather/vinyl restorer, looking pretty good now
