Default What kind of buffer?

I have been getting more and more into detailing my car and I figure I am kind of at a dead end until I get a buffer. What kind should I go with I know they can be dangerous if you don't know what you're doing and I have never buffed a car before... So what is my best bet as far as safety goes without compromising its functionality? ? Any suggestions on models and best places to buy one would be great. Also price is somewhat of an issue but not really a deciding factor

I can't recommend a rotary, but if you want a DA...there is only one choice...the Porter Cable...check out the sticky at the top of this forum for more info about the PC...I just started using mine today and it's a breeze...the results are impressive, too.

Porter Cable 7424.

It's an orbital, not a rotary, so it's not rough on your paint with a medium-cut or fine abrasive polish. It's extremely easy to use.

Sweet...no ***** required ...I just fired mine up for the first time today...it's sooooo easy to use. In fact, I had some deep swirls on the hood and I even switched from the orange to yellow pad with Menzerna IP and the results are sweet. The yellow pad cuts a little more than orange, but it really doesn't create much "haze"...after the IP, I'm going Menzerna FPII, FT glaze, and Pinnacle Sovereign...anyway, now that I've rambled on...this thing is very easy to use, the results are great, and there is little or no chance that the paint can get hurt...read the "how-tos" and fire that puppy up!

good thing our jobs don't require any either but anyway, i only bought an orange and white pad with the PC but was only planning on using that new Zaino stuff (PC fusion i think). now i am wondering if i should order all of the other stuff as well. i used the Zaino by hand and it took out 80-90% of the scratches so i think that i will be OK. eh, we'll see. (just kidding about the jobs by the way )

back on topic, from everything that i have heard and read, the Porter Cable is the way to go. you can find a few places in the sticky at the top of this forum that will give you plenty of good info as well as sites to buy the products from.

Well, you can always go with what you have and if you need more, get it...I was a little shocked at how much swirl I had actually accumulated over the years...I started off with the IP on an orange pad...it took the majority of the fine stuff out, but the deeper stuff was stubborn. I switched to the yellow pad and bye bye! My point is that you can always start off light and then go to more aggressive if needed...

Thanks alot guys, now its just a matter of not being broke. Honestly I am just sick of waxing the damn thing by hand + the buffer has to do a better job than by hand. Also as far as the zaino swirl remover stuff goes, how long does that stuff last , how long will it be before my swirls show their ugly faces again. I want to use some kind of sealant + a synthetic wax ( or are sealants and synthetic waxes the same?) + a carnauba wax

The primary reason to use a buffer is to remove surface defects, not to apply wax.

An abrasive polish, such as the Zaino Z-PC, will permanantly remove defects, not just cover them up. Having them stay gone will depend on your washing/drying/waxing techniques and supplies (ie. mitts, towels, etc.).
