Automatic Shift Knob Options
That is exactly what I have. The stock **** drove me crazy for the exact same reason. Not to mention the T/A version looks so much better. When I installed mine, I had to modify the handle a little bit. I had to drill out a little bit of plastic in the top of the handle so it would slip all the way down onto the stick. It feels and looks factory BTW.
Go get a shift **** from an auto newer Grand Prix. (You can get em in the knobbly rubber/vinyl stuff or leather...) It kinda feels like a bigger T56 **** with a button on the underside.
Like so... (mind you this is on a thirdgen, but I'm half tempted to toss one in my 97. The T-handles boring me again.)

But thats probably cost-prohibitive.
I was thinking about this one:

Here is the same **** with the Saturn logo:

"Ion automatic ****"
I only put up that second **** so you can see the button better. The only thing I dont like about it is that the button isn't just round, it has two little "ears" sticking out of the leading edge. If you see the pics you'll see what I mean.
Another good idea for autos is a leather shift boot. I have done it one mine.

[wishful thinking]I'd like to transplant the whole new GTO interior into my car.[/wishful thinking]
EDIT:
I think there was a Buick recently with a similar ****, except the button didnt stick up and the top was slightly concave. I really liked it. I was one of the better ***** I have seen, but I dont remember the model. I think it was a 2004+ though.
EDIT:
I just looked around Buick's site and cant find it. Maybe it was an older one.
