Question Replacing rear hatch shocks

Hopefully this is the right section for this thread...

It’s just about time to replace the hatch shocks on my ’98. The issue is, I can’t seem to figure out how to remove the rear interior panel to expose the bolt that attaches the shock to the interior. What’s the trick? I’m guessing that the hook above the rear seat speaker needs to be removed to pull that panel, but I can’t figure out how to do that without breaking it. So what’s the proceedure?

Seems like this should be a simple project. It was easy on my 3rd gen, the bolt was exposed. I’ve never had to change hatch shocks on a 4th gen though.

Thanks in advance

Maybe this should be in a different section? Not sure where though....

the hook has a clip holding it in in the center. The way i got it off was i used a flathead screwdriver to pull the clip out a little and get something else to pull that sumbitch out. Its function is similar to all interior fasteners, but it is a bitch to get out. you have to pull and wriggle it pretty hard.

Thanks for the info.

I was able to pop the center clip of the hook out a little, but I was afraid to put much force behind trying to pull it all the way out. Guess I just have to pull harder.....
