Isn't the black styrofoam the bumper support?
As far as the attachment holes, I contemplated having them filled and painted but the bodyshop said that most likely, they will eventually crack the paint and that AINT a good thing. I plan on replacing my grill with either the SS SLP Grill or the RK Sport carbon fiber (painted and cleared)
I was going to just remove the license plate cover at first, but it is rivited? on. I couold not get if off. After seeing some LS1's with the grille completly removed i thought it locked better than the stock grille and not as cheap....

the key is leaving the styro foam in so that you can position the mesh wedged in bewtween the plastic body bumber and the styrfoam. there is just enough space to slide the mesh into it.
i put some masking tape around the opennings so that when i slid the mesh in i did not scratch the paint. i had to bow or bend the mesh a little to get it to slide in (since the mesh is a little bit bigger than the hole so that you can get it to stay in there.)
