Default swirls and microfibers...

hey guys, i have two questions. first of all, i have some swirls in my paint, and want to take care of them. i dont want someone else working on my car, espescially the paint. i want to use 3m swirl remover (mainly becaiuse i have alot of trust in 3m products) but im wondering if i will even see any results using it by hand. anyone have any experience with this? also, how do you determine the quality of a microfiber towel? i have some from work (i work at a car dealership) but i dont know if they are the "good stuff" any help?

If you can remove noticeable swirls by hand...then you would almost have to have superhuman powers. You really need a machine to get enough "oomph" into this to get rid of the swirls. Get a porter cable and practice on someone elses car first.

As far as the good microfiber towels, get them from one of our sponsors, they all sell the good stuff. I used Tropicare towels on my mom's Benz, and they worked great!

I have to agree with Manny... for years I tried to fix swirls on my SS and I was unsuccessfull until I tried a machine.

I'm lazy, so I use a machine.

As for the microfiber question, it's really more of a feel thing, and it also depends on the purpose of the towel. My drying towels have thicker pile than my detailing towels, but the detailing towels are more plush. I typically try to pick a towel based either on someone's recommendation, or by feeling it. If it feels coarse, it probably is, and should be avoided.

I've removed noticable swirls on MANY different cars by hand... Are you talking about swirls from a rake or something??? Maybe you guys just aren't doing enough prep work.

Well, there is a difference between removing swirls and covering them up. It is pretty hard to use 3M swirl remover, which is an abbrassive to cut down the clear coat to an even level thus eliminating the swirls. It really takes a machine to do that efficiently, I didn't say it was impossible by hand, it just takes a looooooot of time.

Now, using some of the other products to fill in the swirls is much easier, but it usually doesn't last very long. Those products are usually high in oil content and make everything look nice and shiny, but don't last longer than a couple of car washes.
