If he has 'nostril's' then he must have a Ram Air hood of some type. The nostril openings are not completely blocked off - they have baffles installed in the hood behind them to let air in thru a torturous path as to not let in any water when driving in the rain. These baffles can be removed (do a search on the forum - there have been several on this topic).
Your lower airbox should have an opening all along the front also to allow air up thru your filter. Obviously the stock setup does not have the opening behind the hood positively seal against the opening in the front of the airbox - so it's not true 'Ram Air'.
There was a mod (Brian Greene Ram Air aka BGRA) that included parts to duct the air from your nostril openings back to the airbox opening and positively seal against the airbox - but unforunately, he is not making the kit any more
And it's easier to catch a flight on the Shuttle than it is to find a kit used that is for sale. I've been looking for months and none have shown up
