'Carefully' drill out the rivet!
Its easy to slip and damage an interior part with the drill.

After that, I re-attached my handle with a small Black plastic type wire tie, Radio shack carries them in bulk. So if I have to take off the handle again, it'll be a snap to cut the strap off.

Can you just raise it up all the way and pull the console out over it? I just want to pull the interior for a stereo install.

Yes, you can remove the console without removing the parking brake handle. You will have to pull the lever up as close to vertical as possible. If you can't pull it up far enough to remove the console, using a screwdriver to hold the adjuster pawl disengaged from the gear will allow you to pull it up higher.
