I think you should paint it like this:
Airbrushed is definitely the way to go. An easy design is to get some vinyl overlays... put them on the surface and then spray lightly around it. When you remove the vinyl you get something similiar to superman09's air filter cover (you may have to search to see that unless he see's this first)
