The pics you see are of bare polished iron. The stuff that I'm having the block coated with will look something like this:

The stuff's as durable as powdercoat, and comes with a 3-year warranty. When I asked the guy at American Powdercoating if this coating will hold in heat like a traditional chrome plate would, he said that it "breathes" just as well as standard paint and that I wouldn't need to worry about the block overheating.
Since the block will be sealed off from rust, maintenance will consist of spraying it with a bottle of Windex and wiping with a paper towel.

As stated earlier, don't send a rod through it! I'm building a 400 for my Camaro but I know it won't look as good as yours.

couldnt you have power coated the block with the chrome like finish they have now?

It would hold up better to dirt etc, but maybe thats to much heat?
