Well put Nine Ball. I have to agree with everything you've said...CLEAN, CLEAN, CLEAN!

The most important thing to me is that it looks like it could / should have come from the factory, and if it's modified, it need to or at least look like it serves some function...i.e. adding brake ducts to a non-Z06 vette, etc.

Retro is cool in moderation. For instance, if you put hockey stripes on a 4th gen, they should go with the lines of the car, and not look exactly like a 1st gen. BLAH.

I certainly don't have a lot of physical evidence of my taste, but that's coming soon....

I think you did good with you styling/customizing if someone looks at your car and says "nice car man"...then looks at something closer and says "wait a minute, thats not factory is it?". My meaning here is that what ever mod you do flows so well it has a factory like appearance/finish to it.

Now, I know not everyone cares for my customizing, but its not something people will spot out of the corner of their eye and go "wtf happened there??". While i customize my car to my liking, I am not oblivious to others thoughts, and have removed items that are too much. Less is generaly more.

I have always been bugged by "unnecessary" things on cars. By unnecessary I don't mean things that were added tastefully such as stripes, I mean things like putting a bunch of stickers on your car as is popular with ricers, and regretfully enough, some f-body's. Also like putting a bunch of badges on your car. I've seen a couple of f-body's with way too many badges that to me completely took away from the car. I think the body kits that came on Trans Am's from the factory look good, but I think body kits on Camaro's take a lot away from the look (just my opinion)...these are the things I mean by unnecessary...things that don't add to the look of the car, but are added just because.

I was surprised by what Nine Ball said about sticking to a 2 color theme. I wasn't surprised because I disagreed, but surprised because I realized I had been doing this all along, but never thought about that was what I was doing, or that it was a good principle to go by. My SS is red, and I started going with a Red/Chrome theme. I have the chrome SS ten spokes, a chrome insert on the scoop, chrome sticker/fill-ins where it says CAMARO on the back, and I took of the stock grill and have the chrome fill-ins for that CAMARO. I also put in the clear corners so that now all the lights kind-of have a chrome look. I'm getting ready to polish my brake calipers so that they look nice and shiny, and start polishing under the hood so that it matches as well.

I do have a question for you Nine Ball, and you other guys who probably have a better eye for these things than myself....I want to do some painting under my hood to really add to it when I go to car shows or just want to show off my car. I would like to paint the lid, fuel rail covers, and the intake. Should I stick to the red/chrome theme in there? 'Trust' and I were talking and thought it might look good to get those painted the same red as my car, and then have maybe silver/chrome flames or some other accent....It just seems so dull in there now, and I want to do something different than what most people have done under the hood. (If I should start my own thread because this is getting off topic then let me know). Thanks!!

I agree with this man.

Subtle touches are the best... sleek and clean = win.

I prefer the look of 'the way it should have looked from the factory' opposed to the 'custom g-ride y0 my **** is off the chain!!1!1!'

You are on the right track then. Hard to beat a clean black SS. Get that interior back to black too. Honestly, the chrome SS wheels still look "right" on an SS.

My 35th SS was red/chrome under the hood too. I had a custom airbox decal made, chromed the valvecovers, painted the intake silver and painted the fuel rails red and coil packs red. It was very clean, people always asked if the anniversary cars came like that from the factory. Pics on the link in my sig, click on the red '02 SS convertible.

Not really sure where I get my ideas but I am always looking to do something different with my cars. I remember seeing a Steel Gray Viper in 2001 for the first time after I picked up the SS thinking that would be a really nice color to repaint the SS! So I ended up doing it and was the first SS to be painted that color. Same with my 98 SS, saw a Diamond Pearl White Cadillac Escalade and didnt see anyone with that color so I repainted it. Done quite a bit of custom stuff with my cars but at the same time keep a nice clean look.

I am actually making a few changes to both cars soon and will post some pictures.

I think it rubbed off on me big time, All i know i have always had a weakness for a sweet looking ride and i have always been told all the cars i have had were deff attention grabbers....i guess once you've been bitten by the car bug you can never escape it lol.....

This thread is awsome! All of my influence came from many places, my dad having a 72 Z28(not stock) my love for cars and this site for the specific stuff for f-bodys. So far i have stuck with a NBM/Red accents/blue interior nights theme. I'm going to keep the paint factory, because i have always been a sucker for this color. As for the red accents, its going to be the calipers(already done)the suspension and a few interior pieces painted red. I'm currently designing a custom Z28 Firefighter Edition badge for the side, which will be red with small flames, slightly larger than the stock badge. the blue lights will be for all switches, guages and displays, for the fact that at night red will be barely visible, and blue is soft on the eyes and very appealing when done right. as for crome, a crome billet grill and the rims will be the only crom on my car. i feel if i do anything else crome it will look too flashy IMO.

I like what Tony said in an earlier post. Make it look like it would have came that way from the factory. That goes along way. For me it takes a long time before I decide what exactly I want on my car. I want it to stand out, but not neccesarily jump out at you. Kind of hard to describe.

I'm quite hesitant to post any of my background & experience in styling, seeing how close minded many people on this forum are. I haven't heard much positive about what I think is a damn nice looking car (from the vision I see when it will be done). My background is EXTREMELY similar to nineball and I agree with most of what he says. But my ideas/influences all happened in Montana, so I get no respect because I am from a state not know for hot rods. I always like to say that I am "Geographically Challenged" it has really hurt me in my Engineering career (the US government was the only place I could get a job after graduating from Montana State University with a 4.0 GPA!).

My dad has been building and painting hot rods for atleast 30 years now, and I spent every spare moment of my childhood in the garage. I will admit my dad has done some "cool at the time" paint jobs that just look horrendous today, but I've seen some early Foose stuff that falls in the same category.

The main problem I always hear about my car is the color, which I cannot understand why everyone says is a RICE color when I have always loved lime green since I saw my first Challenger. I like to see people take risks with their cars, and unfortunately most of the times they end badly but others make huge strides in customizing.

Oh well in the end it really does have to do with what you like, because it is your car, but it is difficult to not care what others say. I've been busted picking apart hot rods at car shows with the owner close enough to hear, and I really felt like a Jack ***! It just shows some peoples tact with how rude they are with their opinions about someone elses baby, everyone is entitled to their opinion but they don't realize what they think looks good isn't what everyone else does.

GrnDragon, I looked @ your cardomain and I really like your car. I think it looks quite unique and everything flows very smoothly. Please update with new pics on interior and the headlites. Good job on going in a different direction. Jim
