Default how do you remove a automatic shifter

i am redoing the interior of my 98. the only problem is i can't get the shift **** off of my a4. i know in my t56 the **** just screws off. is it the same for the a4. i tried gorrilla gripping it but to no avail, and before i really go to town on it i was wandering if there are some of you a4 guys out there that know a secret about getting it off.

put on the parking break and slide the gear lever towards you and look at the front side. you will see a small piece of metal. pull it out. its the clip that holds the **** on.

get a small flathead screwdriver to pry it out then use your hand if you can or pliers to pull the rest of it out and the shifter **** should pull straight up.
