I wish I known before hand also so I could of painted it. How did you cut the tint back with out scratching the window?? I was just going to take it back to the shop and they was going to cut it back for me then ill paint it once I figure out what paint to use and all that.

i used a razor blade and went right along the top defroster line, it kinda helped guide the blade so it was a neat cut. then i just pealed it off and cleaned up the glass.

Hmm not sure if I could be steady enough I might still just have the shop do it. Then ill paint it myself of course.

I tint windows, and when we run into something like this we usually just tint up to the dot matrix, unless the customer says otherwise. In my case when I tinted my WS6, I test fit the tint on the exterior just like usual, then trimmed off the area that would cover the dot matrix. I then used the piece that i trimmed off as a template to trace out some black vinyl. Then I applied the tint, and vinyl butted up to it. Looks greeat!

Ok, on my car you can't just "peel" the tint off. And how do you adhere the vinyl without having it look nasty from the outside. I'd really like a pic of this.

well to me it was really easy to get ahold of since we also do custom vinyl graphics, decals etc. at work. however, see if you can find a place in town that does something similar. maybe a sign shop, or someone who does computer plotted graphics.

When I bought my car all the windows were tinted but in the great state of NJ you cant have the front windows done..my question is how can I tell how dark the back window is so I can re-tint the side windows myself? And there is no way of contacting the previous owner bc I bought it from a dealership in CT

i dont know if you would be able to find out the percentage of the back tint unless you took it to a shop that could tell just by looking at it. if you can't get somebody to tell you what it could be, then you could just go with a tint that you know would be a little bit lighter than the back. it would look a lot better than if you had your front windows darker than the back. hope that makes some sense.

i dont have a picture to post up right now but i can take one tommorrow...just make sure that whoever you get the vinyl from knows thats when then adhesive backing is removed, that the adhesive side needs to be black as well. and as far as finding out the tint on your rear window....we have a tint meter that will give you the VLT (visible light transmisson). it slides over the window edge. of course that wont work on a rear window, so I would say a trained eye is your best bet. do you have any pics? i might be able to give you a reasonable guess

Tried this several different ways in 5 different 4th gens over the past 10 years.

My favorite was tinting up to the dots, then spray painting flat black as has already been mentioned.

Also, to answer someone else's question of how dark the back tint is, someone that tints should be able to just about immediately look at it and tell you how dark it is, 5, 20, 35, etc.
